“Celebrating! 20 Years from Pessimism to Optimism-Providing Hope and Healing to Veterans!”

Dear Member/Guests:

The Department of Veterans Affairs National Black Chaplains Association annual training conference will be Thursday, October 22 through Sunday, October 25, 2009 at The Crowne Plaza Atlanta Airport Hotel, 1325 Virginia Avenue, Atlanta, Georgia.

This training conference purpose is two-fold: to celebrate our past and present accomplishments as an association and to empower, challenge and equip Chaplains to provide the best possible pastoral care to our returning Veterans of the current war; to help them in the healing process from the mental, physical, social, and spiritual wounds of combat. It is our purpose to: (a) challenge each of you to explore how we as Chaplains can lead the way in creating a friendly environment for their families in every patient care venue of the VA, (b) equip you to become subject matter experts in providing training to community clergy and churches, (c) develop new strategies of recruitment of attracting African American Chaplains to apply for VA positions as they become available. We will spend some time on self-help, advancement, succession planning, and we will deal with our own stress issues of taking care of ourselves as African American Chaplains.

It is imperative that you make your reservations with the Crowne Plaza Airport Atlanta Hotel prior to October 9th to get the VA Black Chaplains Discount Conference Rate of $95.00 + tax.  Please call the Crowne Plaza Atlanta Airport Hotel to make your reservation and guarantee your room.  The toll free reservation number is (866) 750-3365. Please ask for the DVA National Black Chaplains Group Rate.

We would appreciate your participation as we provide this invaluable opportunity to listen to outstanding presenters, subject matter experts, formidable conversation embracing the insights of members of the association, the military, and the VA community. You don’t want to miss this 20th Anniversary Celebration. We are inviting The Honorable Congressmen John Lewis of Georgia, and the former Director of VA Chaplain Service, and former Chief of Chaplains of the U.S. Army Chaplains Matthew Zimmerman to be among our presenters. This year we will be taking pictures to be put in the Buffalo Soldiers Museum of our past and present chaplains, and their activities. Please don’t miss being a part of this historical
event.

Feel free to invite other chaplains who may not be on our mailing list to this worthwhile event. If you know of any retired VA or Military Black Chaplains please encourage them to attend this 20th year celebration.

I look forward to welcoming you in Atlanta.
