March 26-29, 2009 Hilton Garden Inn Hampton Central 1999 Power Plant Parkway Hampton, VA 23666
Department of Veterans Affairs National Black Chaplains Association P.O. Box 3059 Hampton, Virginia 23667
Dear Board Members:
The Department of Veterans Affairs National Black Chaplains Association will hold its Executive Board Meeting on 26-29 March 2009 with the 26th & 29th being travel days. The meeting will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Hampton, Virginia, and the National Chaplain Center. We will be addressed by the Director of Chaplain Service Chaplain Keith Ethridge and other VA leaders.
In the last 19 years our Association accomplishments in the area of recruitment, racial relations, diversity has been numerous. There are still a number of challenges we face, and must address. It is imperative that we design an updated strategic plan for the Association during this Executive Board meeting that address realistic goals that are results driven.
Last November we joined with the Military Chaplains Association USA, on Veterans Day in being a partner in the sponsoring of the National Veterans Day Activities at the Arlington National Cemetery with the White House Staff, and the Vice-President of the United States as the Keynote Speaker. It was my honor to be the first chaplain in our nation’s history to speak at this National event. Chaplains have given Invocations in the past, but never served as one of the speakers.
This was also the first year in our nations’ history when chaplains sponsored such an event. You will appreciate hearing the reports from our members of their experience at this historical occasion for chaplains.
The members of the Association have invested their trust in each of you and have value your leadership, therefore has elected you to serve on the Executive Board. According to the Governance Manual of our Association, Article 111; Section 2, “there shall be an Executive Board Meeting held each March or as otherwise designated by the President in conjunction with the Executive and Time and Place Committees. All members shall have the right to attend and participate in the meeting designed for business and planning. Issues specifically related to VA Chaplaincy that do not directly involve other cognate groups shall be decided upon by vote of persons holding Executive Board or General Membership status. All members in attendance shall have the right to vote on other issues presented to the entire body for decision.”
Therefore, as an Officer and Executive Board Member it is vital that you be present, and all officers, and committee chairs are expected to make your annual report, both orally and in writing.
Look forward to greeting you on March 26, 2009 at our no-host dinner at 6:00 P.M.
Respectfully,
Chaplain Michael L. McCoy, President Associate Director National Chaplain Center Hampton, Virginia 23667 757 728-3180 Office 757 593-2261 Cell
